East 106th Street Design Study

Harlem CDC's Planning Department developed a conceptual urban
plan for redesigning the East 106th Street corridor from Central
Park to the East River and worked with Taller Boricua and its
consultant Grahame Shane, professor of urban design at Columbia
University to refine it. The main theme of the plan is to recreate
East 106th Street into an "arts and cultural" focal point for El
Barrio, East Harlem.
The concept goes beyond streetscape enhancements, and explores
ideas about how passive areas along the street can be redeveloped to
provide greater revenues to their owners, improve social interaction
and safety within the neighborhood, and provide new locations for
arts-related businesses and cultural organizations.
These ideas have been incorporated into a planning document
development in conjunction with the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone
and its consultants, the City College Architectural Center. View a
rendering of its conceptual plan
