La Marqueta and the Park Avenue Market Mile

Harlem CDC's Planning Department brought together Meta Brunzema Architects, Irwin Cohen (developer of Chelsea Market) and Gardiner and Theobald to create an environmentally and culturally sustainable plan for converting the area under the elevated Park Avenue Viaduct rail line, from 110th to 132nd Streets, into a permanent outdoor market featuring specialty foods, arts and crafts produced on-site by local artisans.

This vision combines the latest in environmental “green” planning and architecture coupled with an innovative approach to workforce development. Working closely with Council Member Melissa Mark-Viverito, East Harlem Business Capital Corporation and other local community groups and entrepreneurs, and the City of New York, we seek to create space for 315 new businesses and 1,500 new jobs within the historic La Marqueta site – 111th to 119th Streets – and 700 new local businesses and 3,000 jobs throughout the entire Park Avenue Market Mile.
